What inspired the InterChange Group, Inc. to begin developing a 600,000 sq. ft. cold storage facility in the Shenandoah Valley? Market access and a growing need for additional cold storage across the region. InterChange is investing in that access in a very big way, with $41.6 million dedicated towards Phases 1 and 2 of their cold storage project. A locally-grown Third Party Logistics provider and developer, InterChange has continuously adapted to market needs and established their role as a vital leader in the growing supply chain centered within the region’s thriving food and beverage industry.
The availability of the cold storage facility will allow goods to be stored locally, saving producers money on transportation and boosting the regional economy. A similar investment has not been seen in the Shenandoah Valley for 20 years.
This facility is being constructed in several phases, with the approximately 15,000 pallet position, 110,000 sq. ft. Phase 1 construction nearing completion. A similarly sized Phase 2 will be available this fall and will be the first phase to include rail access. The entire facility has the potential to reach up to 600,000 sq. ft. and 80,000 pallet positions in multiple rooms with temperatures ranging from -10F up to 34F along with blast freezing and other services. The new rail service and road improvements supply the infrastructure needed to connect the facility to area manufacturers and the Port of Virginia, providing opportunities for international export of food products.
